1978 Ferrari 512 BB

In October 1976, the Ferrari 512 Berlinetta Boxer (512 BB) was introduced at the Paris Auto Show, succeeding the 365 GT4 BB. The 512 BB retained a similar mechanical layout and exterior but featured a new front chin spoiler, NACA intakes on the sides, and four taillights instead of six.

The 365BB/512BB series was notable for being Ferrari’s first production cars with a 180-degree flat 12-cylinder engine, featuring belt-driven camshafts. The 512 BB’s engine produced 360 DIN bhp at 6,200 rpm with Weber carburetors, later replaced by Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection in 1981 to meet US emission standards.

This change reduced horsepower to 340 and torque to 333 foot-pounds at 4,600 rpm, but the car still achieved 0-60 mph in six seconds and a top speed of nearly 175 mph. The 512 BB’s interior included plush leather, full instrumentation, electric windows, three-point seat belts, and air conditioning. A unique “single-arm, twin blade” windshield wiper was designed to clear the expansive windshield.
